You Do Not Need a Bigger Audience. You Need Evidence of the Right Customer
A founder can build attention for months and still learn little about who will buy. Separate audience signals from customer evidence.

The first audience a founder should build is an evidence loop with the right customer, not a vanity metric.
In short
- • A practical framework for sequencing customer evidence and audience growth so attention supports learning and commercial intent.
An audience can be useful without being a customer base. Followers, views, comments and shares can show attention. They do not by themselves prove that the people watching have the problem, authority, urgency or willingness to pay.
Start with the customer decision
Define the customer before defining the audience. Who experiences the problem? Who decides whether to buy? What triggers the decision? What alternative is used today? What evidence would make the buyer change?
Recent Reddit discussions raise the gap between social engagement and actual customers. One 2026 r/Entrepreneur discussion described strong engagement but few buyers and noted that lower-reach, more specific posts were producing stronger commercial signals. Other small business discussions question whether time spent building followers is producing customers. These are individual accounts, not evidence that social media works or fails universally.
Measure intent, not just attention
Track actions closer to the commercial decision: qualified conversations, demo requests, target-segment trials, repeat usage, referrals and paid conversions. The right metric depends on the business model, but the useful principle is to measure behavior close to the decision you need to understand.
Build the smallest useful audience
Choose a narrow customer problem and publish around it. Watch which questions repeat. Talk directly to people with the problem. Compare what they say with what they actually do. Reddit Business describes communities as places where businesses can observe discussions around customer problems, while emphasizing useful participation rather than purely promotional behavior.
A useful sequence is customer problem, customer language, useful content, relevant conversations, commercial evidence, then broader reach.
Protect the brand from manufactured proof
The FTC says advertising claims must be truthful and evidence-based, and its guidance on reviews and endorsements warns against deceptive representations. A growing audience should not become a reason to imply traction the company has not earned.
When an audience becomes strategically valuable
An audience becomes more useful when it overlaps with people who can buy, refer, influence or meaningfully evaluate the product. The company learns customer language, publishes useful answers, earns trust and gives prospects reasons to start a conversation.
A practical weekly test
Ask which customer problem you learned more about, which content attracted the right people, what qualified prospects asked, which behavior indicated intent, and what changed because of the evidence.
Community perspective: Reddit threads include founders questioning whether follower growth translates into customers and small business owners comparing social reach with referrals, search and repeat business. These are community perspectives, not universal conclusions.

What to carry forward
- → Define the customer decision before growing reach
- → Distinguish attention from commercial intent
- → Track behavior closer to purchase
- → Use community language as qualitative research
- → Never substitute manufactured social proof for evidence
Build reach around a validated customer problem. Let customer evidence shape the message before optimizing the message for scale.
