Fund
Grants, partnerships, and resources for founders. The Arena Fund is not investment capital. It is the capital that makes the community possible.
The gap that traditional funding does not fill
Traditional funding: VC, angel, accelerator fills a specific need: the capital required to build and scale a company. But the founder's needs are not just capital. They are access: to networks, to knowledge, to the kind of honest conversation that is not available in the investor relationship. They are infrastructure: the tools, the frameworks, the community that makes the building process more efficient and less lonely. They are validation, not the validation of a term sheet, but the validation of peers who understand what it means to build. The Arena Fund exists to fill these gaps, because the ecosystem that produces the companies of the future needs to invest in the founders who are building them, not just the companies they are building.
The Arena Fund operates differently from traditional funding. It is not an investment fund that takes equity and expects a return. It is a community fund that provides grants, partnerships, and resources to founders who are doing meaningful work: the work that the market has not yet recognised as valuable, the work that takes longer than the typical investment horizon, the work that requires the kind of support that capital alone cannot provide. The fund is replenished by the community: by the founders who have benefited from it, by the partners who believe in the model, by the ecosystem that recognises that investing in founders is investing in the future.
The grant model
The grants are not loans. They are not investments. They are resources: capital provided without obligation, without equity, without the expectation of a specific outcome. The founders who receive grants are not promising to pay the fund back. They are promising to use the resources to advance their work and to contribute back to the community when they are able. This model is unusual in the founder ecosystem, where every source of capital comes with strings attached - equity, board seats, reporting requirements, growth targets. The Arena Fund's grant model exists because the founders who are doing the most interesting work often cannot meet the requirements of traditional funding, and the community benefits more from their continued work than from the return on an investment that would have forced them to change direction.
The grant process is designed to be lightweight. Not the extensive due diligence of a VC round, but a focused assessment of the founder's work, their trajectory, and their commitment to the community. The application is not a pitch deck. It is a conversation: a structured dialogue between the founder and the fund that surfaces the substance of the work rather than the performance of it. The grants are awarded based on the quality of the work and the founder's alignment with the community's values, not on the projected return or the market size.
Partnerships and ecosystem building
The Fund also facilitates partnerships: connections between founders and the resources they need to advance their work. These connections are not transactional. They are relational - introductions to mentors, access to research, connections to potential collaborators, pathways to the kind of infrastructure that accelerates the building process. The Fund acts as the connector, using its position within the community to identify where the resources are and where they are needed, and to make the connections that traditional networks do not make.
The partnerships also extend to organisations outside the community: corporate partners, research institutions, government programs, other founder ecosystems who can provide resources, access, or support that the community cannot provide on its own. The Fund's role is to be the bridge: to understand what the founder needs, to identify where that need can be met outside the community, and to facilitate the connection in a way that benefits both the founder and the partner. The ecosystem is not a closed loop. It is a network, and the Fund is one of the nodes that makes the network work.
